1900 Federal Census Index entry for Michael Mund.

In 1900 Michael and Mary Mund were living at 11 Avenue B, New York City.  They state that they have been married 7 years.  Michael  gave his age as 28 years old and a birthdate of March 1872.  Place of birth was Austria.  He immigrated in 1886.  Michael’s  profession is listed as “Tailor”.

Headings on page of 1900 Federal Census where Michael and Mary Mund, along with Michael’s nephew William Stolbach, appear.

Mary was 26 years old, born in 1874 in Austria.  She immigrated to the U.S. in 1885.  She did not have any children.

Entries for Michael and Mary Mund, and William Stolbach, in 1900 Federal Census.

Both Michael and Mary are listed as Naturalized.

Michael’s nephew William Stulbach, born December 1876 in Austria, is also listed as living with them.  William came to the U.S. in  1897 and was also a tailor.  His status was Alien.  I have not been able to find any other information about William at all.

The date of the 1900 Federal Census was June 14, 1900.

On June 1, 1905 the New York Census was taken for the Enumeration District #14 where Michael and Mary were living.  This time the  couple resided at 42-44 Broome Street.

1905 New York State Census page where Michael and Mary Mund are entered.

Michael’s profession is still listed as a tailor.  Michael’s ages were 32 and Mary was 30. So far so good with the ages.  In later  Census records there are some changes of +/- 1-2 years.  In this Census Michael listed that he’d been in the USA 18 years and Mary  20.  Both are now citizens according to this Census.

The Federal Census of 1910 was taken on April 16-18, 1910 in the district where Michael and Mary now lived.  The couple was living at  224 East 7th Street, New York City.  Michael was now working as an “operator” at a clothing shop.  I think “Operator’ means a sewing  machine operator.

This time there is a one year difference in ages instead of two year difference.  Mary is listed as 36 years old and Michael as 37.   They’ve been married 11 years according to this Census and they both state their year of immigration as 1888.Both are naturalized.

This Census caused me to pause and consider:

1. There is a difference in the years of marriage.  The Michael and Mary Mund of the 1893 marriage certificate would have been  married 17 years not 11.

2.  The year of immigration is now the same for each instead of 2 years apart.

3.  Is this a different couple with the same names?

4.  Did the Enumerator actually speak to Michael and Mary or did he get the information from neighbors?  Anything is possible.

No matter how many times, though, that I search for Michael Mund in New York City during this period only one Michael comes up in  results when the wife Mary is included in the search.

1910-1911 Trow’s New York City Directory

Title Page of Trow’s 1911 General Directory for Manhattan and the Bronx.

A surprise popped up when I searched in the 1911 New York City Directory.  The results again were for only one Michael Mund in the  Manhattan.

1911 Trow’s City Directory for Manhattan and the Bronx, entry for Michael Mund.

Michael is right above Munday, Bert (second above the word “Careful” in the left hand column.)  The name is abbreviated as Michl and  his home (h) address is listed as “224 7th”.  I wondered if that was 7th Avenue or 7th Street?  East 7th Street?

I’m going to say that for sure this is Tessie’s Dad.  Why?  Because the 1910 Federal Census provides strong evidence.  The Munds  lived at 224 East 7th Street when the Census was taken.

Mary is also 45 years old.  Immigrated in 1888 and was naturalized in 1892.

Michael and Mary’s place of birth was Krakow in Poland-Austria.

The Question now comes up:  Is the Tessie Mund listed with my Great Grandparents in the 1930 Census the same person, or someone else?   Did she move out of her parents house on Jerome Street after the Census was taken and move to Avenue O to live with the  Flashenbergs?
